Gears of War Review
game: Gears of War
review | 12/19/06 | Chris Martin
The Xbox 360 needed a killer app to help counteract the release of both the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii, a game that would make their year-old system more appealing to potential Christmas shoppers. Well, Epic delivered with Gears of War, one of the best games to ever grace a game system. Even after the shiny new gleam has worn off, Gears of War continues to amaze, and promises to be a lasting online and offline hit for some time to come. Between Gears of War and Halo, Microsoft is holding some intellectual properties that will sell consoles, and you better bet that they know it.

Game With Fame: Play Against Famous Rejection
news | 12/11/06 | Aaron Stanton
Sometimes funny things happen when advertising campaigns collide. In the latest Game With Fame opportunity, gamers are being given the chance to play online via Xbox Live with The Burger King. That\'s right, some lucky gamers will have the chance to play against a celebrity opponent that doesn\'t say anything ever. While I can still see how the idea is amusing, there\'s an irony behind giving people a chance to sit down and chat online with someone that\'s not going to say anything back. When it all boils down to it, you\'ll be talking to an empty void for the length of the game. On the upside, you do get to also play with the New York Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma, but it\'s easy to see which of the two celebrities that Game With Fame is pushing: You register to play at bkgamer.com.

Square Enix PR Faces Gamer Wrath for Overreaching Embargo Attempt
game: Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
news | 06/26/06 | Aaron Stanton
1Up.com editor Luke Smith recently called Square Enix to task on a press embargo they attempted to impose for the Japanese release of Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria. The embargo laid out guidelines about what the press could and couldn\'t say regarding the storyline of the already released Valkyrie Profile 2, including which characters and locations were safe to talk about. Of course, you can\'t embargo publicly available information, and Smith called them on it, opening Enix to a public lashing in the forums. Here\'s to 1Up\'s editors for having the guts to talk about it, and here\'s a sympathetic shake of the head to Square Enix PR. They\'ve got to be slapping themselves on the head right now.

While we\'ve had our fill of space-age RPGs and the like, taking a tire iron to the face of a walking undead never becomes antiquated. feature | 05/18/06 | Monica Hafer
Head-mounted displays (HMDs) are controversial devices: On the one hand, they fill your complete field of vision with generated graphics, creating an absolutely immersive experience. On the other hand, you cannot turn away from an HMD, and many folks feel claustrophobic or motion-sick using the devices. On the third hand, hired models in shiny silver outfits with laser guns and futuristic virtual reality helmets are so cool-looking that we just have to stop and check them out. Monica checks in on the development of the Trimersion HMD system, compatible with game consoles and PCs. Get the full details here.
